More About This Resource

These differentiated long vowel decodable sentence building activities give first and second grade students practice reading and writing words that contain CVCe and vowel team targeted phonics skills. This resource is the perfect extension activity to use with my  Decodable Passages bundle and can be used for student review, independent work, or as a literacy center!

Each sentence is a phonics-based controlled text sentence that contains target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and irregular high-frequency words. The science of reading shows us that the connection between what our students learn in phonics and what they read & write is imperative for building a strong foundation in early reading!

After building each sentence with word cards, students write the sentence on their printable. They then use the student self-check to edit for accuracy. Students will also have the opportunity to practice their reading fluency by reading to themselves or a friend.

This resource contains the following options in order for the teacher to easily differentiate based on student needs:

  • 2 versions of each printable recording sheet: One version has a sentence stem that requires the student to fill in the blank with a target phonics skill word. The other version does not have a sentence stem and instead requires the student to write the entire sentence.
  • 2 versions of sentence building word cards:  Large word cards are perfect to pair with a pocket chart and small cards can be used at a small group table or student desk.

Included in this resource: ***See Preview File***

This has been my favorite resources in years! I was only able to use it once so far and we did it small group. My student loved the “challenge” of figuring out the sentence. I loved being able to hear their reasons for why certain words had to go in specific places. Capital letter beginning, that one has a period, figuring out which 2 words with capitals could go first…It was also great because I was able to help them edit their sentences immediately. (Capitals, spaces…snack instead of snake). Thank you ❤️❤️

These are the perfect addition to mini lessons. Great skill builders in Phonics skill and Sentence work.

  3. denmotherof3 (verified owner)

I love that students can use the checklist for accuracy and the checklist for fluency! GREAT RESOURCE that is centered around skill! It is aligned with all my SOR resources and I couldn’t be happier!

  4. gjohnson (verified owner)

I adore this resource! I was amazed at how well it let me differentiate for my different readers. My struggling readers had the scaffolding they needed to complete the activity, but there was also an option that kept my accelerated readers engaged! I can also use this to teach structural analysis and mechanics!

  5. MONIQUE REXER (verified owner)

This is just what I was looking for. I love that students can work on skills such as grammar and conventions while reading decodable words!

  6. Bettyann Spiech (verified owner)

I love the conventions checklist. This will allow students to practice rereading their work and attending to the details of their writing.

  7. Jeanne Schoch (verified owner)

Great resource for so many grammar /reading skills. thanks.

  8. Jenna Tomkins (verified owner)

Love this for a center in my reading rotations! I also use it for my RTI group and it has been great! This is so easy to differentiate for different abilities.

  9. jenoleary10 (verified owner)

Love this resource! I use this for my small group instruction with students who are struggling to form sentences correctly. It’s great to review capitals and end punctuation. As well as I use it in centers.

  10. Heather Andrews (verified owner)

I love this resource! I love all the resources I have bought here. They are perfect for my grade 2/3 class where students have several gaps in their learning. It is also perfect for my ELL students who are learning English and learning how to write. The activities are scaffolded nicely so they can work independently from building and copying to writing with guided support on the resource and then to independent writing! It helps the students feel proud of their progress! They are super engaged.
