Each sentence is a phonics-based controlled text sentence that contains target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words, and irregular high-frequency words. The science of reading shows us that the connection between what our students learn in phonics and what they read & write is imperative for building a strong foundation in early reading!
In this activity, students move around the room with their recording sheet to read & write decodable sentences. There are 2 differentiated versions of each sentence that can be hung side by side throughout the classroom. Level one sentences follow a 1st grade phonics scope & sequence and Level two sentences follow a 2nd grade phonics scope & sequence. Students are taught to record the version of the sentence they can decode. They must also match each sentence to the correct picture on their recording sheet as a self check for decoding skills.

The smile on my student”s face, who struggles so much, when he was able to “decode” the underlined word and then write the sentence was worth every penny I paid for this resource! With the students given choice of which sentence to write, I found most of mine strived to read the harder one. They were successful! The strugglers didn’t feel intimidated and they also were successful with the picture clues! The sentences are fun and the graphics are fantastic. This also lets me evaluate penmanship. I am looking forward to using the spring one soon!
