There are 3 parts to the test which will help you assess who has mastered the skills taught and can extend their learning. The first part is a dictation of the list words. There are 2 star words to review previously learned words and/or “challenge or surprise” words that follow the spelling pattern that you have taught during your phonics accuracy lessons (for example while learning the _at family, a star word could be flat or chat etc.). In the second part students will circle 3 mistakes and correctly write the sentence. (I always read aloud the sentence). Last, the students will read independently the bottom sentence and draw a picture to show comprehension. The last 2 parts of the assessment show if students’ can transfer their knowledge of the spelling skill you have taught into a new situation. Using the dotted lines is also an opportunity for students to practice penmanship.I have included an assessment template for 8, 10, 12, and 14 words.
